This research is investigating the effect of using Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help participants improve their practice of heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) and thereby increase their heart rate variability (HRV) and influence stress, mood, sleep, and other outcomes. HRV measures the natural variation of time between heart beats and is an indicator of balance in the autonomic nervous system and overall well-being. HRVB is aimed at increasing HRV, which leads to many health benefits including but not limited to better immune function, improved stress regulation, increased heart health, and lower symptoms of depression and anxiety. Motivational Interviewing is a clinical approach that seeks to increase intrinsic motivation for health behaviors and is utilized in this study to help participants increase the quality and frequency of their home practices. Research assistants receive training from a certified MI trainer and are also prepared to coach participants in HRVB, during which they will utilize MI skills.
